Each year, our IU Indianapolis TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) engage approximately 310 undergraduate students. As a participant in the program, you can receive services from the day you complete your student contract until the day you graduate from IU Indianapolis with your bachelor degree. Most SSS participants join while in University College and remain active participants event after entering their degree-granting schools.

Application timeline

Any student who meets the program’s eligibility requirements may apply at any time. However, applications are reviewed based on the number of open slots that are available.

Typically, first-year, beginning students apply during the summer before their first-year at IU Indianapolis. Other first-year students apply after the start of the academic year. Transfer students are also encouraged to apply during orientation or shortly after their start at IU Indianapolis.

Eligibility requirements

All applications will be reviewed based on the following criteria as determined by the federal grant.

You must meet at leastĀ oneĀ of the following requirements to join:

  • First-generation student (your parents never graduated with bachelor’s degree)
  • Low-income (see current guidelines)
  • Documented disability

Expectations for ongoing SSS participation

TRIO Student Support Services is committed to the success of its student participants through providing extensive resources and services that are proven to be effective in helping students persist and graduate. In order for you to be successful, you must be committed to fully participating in the services and activities that are provided.

We take into account that the experiences and needs of first-year students are different than those of graduating seniors. As such, participation expectations vary over time. Each TRIO SSS participant is expected to do the following:

Beginning freshmen are expected to:

  • Meet (in-person/virtual) with their TRIO SSS academic advisor two times each semester
  • Attend (in-person/virtual) two workshops each semester
  • Meet (in-person/virtual) with their peer mentor two times each semester
  • Attend one social or educational TRIO SSS-sponsored event each semester

Second and third-year sophomores and juniors are expected to:

  • Meet (in-person/virtual) with their TRIO SSS academic advisor one time each semester
  • Attend (in-person/virtual) two workshops each semester
  • Attend one social or educational TRIO SSS-sponsored event each semester

Fourth-year students and graduating seniors are expected to:

  • Meet (in-person/virtual) with their TRIO SSS academic advisor one time each year
  • Attend (in-person/virtual) one workshop each semester
  • Attend one social or educational TRIO SSS-sponsored event each year
